Today, the most obvious sign of the town’s proud history comes in the form of its giant Skytip – a conical mound of clay waste which rises hundreds of feet above the St Austell skyline.
But any suggestion that St Austell ‘s best days are behind it would be well wide of the mark. There’s much more to the so-called clay country than mining and clay pits. The town is a warm, welcoming place and with the beautiful Carlyon Bay, Mevagissey and Charlestown on its doorstep, there’s certainly more to St Austell than meets the eye. House Prices While property prices in many parts of Cornwall soar, there are still bargains to be had in St Austell when it comes to buying a home.

St Austell’s train station was opened in May and had been recognised since as a Grade II listed heritage asset of special architectural interest. The station, which also sits within the St Austell Conservation Area, has been at the centre of controversy over recent years after concerns grew that Network Rail might attempt to demolish the historic footbridge.
The station has deteriorated over recent years, which is of particular concern to many residents given that it is one of the first things visitors to St Austell see of the town. The riveted iron lattice footbridge is dated and is decorated with the Great Western Railway. It is supported by pairs of cast-iron columns with enriched bases and capitals.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: The new footbridge benefits people with children, heavy luggage or shopping and those with mobility issues. The original footbridge at St Austell Railway Station “Also at risk are good period railway buildings and canopies, an Edwardian upside station building, granite platforms, Great Western Railway railings, retaining walls and cobbled surfacing.
It is in the public interest that, as listed structures of historical significance, and as local landmarks, they are preserved.
