In a letter written in Latin in by Antonio Malfante from the Saharan oasis of Tuwat to a merchant in Genoa, Malfante reports on what he had learnt from an informant about the trans-Saharan trade. He lists several ‘states’ including one called ‘Geni’ and describes the Niger River “Through these lands flows a very large river, which at certain times of the year inundates all these lands. This river passes by the gates of Thambet [Timbuktu].
There are many boats on it, by which they carry on trade.
In any kind of portrait it is often the subject’s clothing that engages us most: fashion history is a fascinating topic and recognising the modes of different eras is an invaluable tool when trying to date unlabelled photographs.

After copies were pressed onto the paper, the paper entered the cabinet under the copier, where it dried on a large roller. An attachment was used to cut dried copies off the roll. Numerous companies produced roller copiers over a period of three decades. For example, Plate 11B shows a Rapid Duplicator that was advertised in Copies could be made more quickly with a roller copier than with a letter copying press.

Painted brick houses I have written another painted brick post with 15 real life examples of painted brick houses and the colors used on the trim and paint, please see link at the bottom of this post. For many years, I dreamed about building a brick Georgian house. I love the symmetry and order of a classic Georgian house.
This house still speaks to me…the windows, chimneys, palladian windows — all elements that I find to be quite beautiful. Architecture by Harrison Design Associates. Working on a home from scratch, somehow I knew that I wanted to go more French in style. Perhaps more accurately, a home that combines some aspects of the Georgian that I love, but which is inspired by French architecture but does not slavishly emulate it. In some ways, what I like seems to combine aspects of both French design with perhaps a little English influence.
The house in this picture was meant to compliment the French house on one side, but make an easy transition to the Georgian house on the other side. It is stucco, which is very commonly found on French style houses in Europe and America.
Garlic Scape Vinegar With our growing season a little later here in slightly cooler upstate New York, we still have bundles and bundles of garlic scapes in the markets and gardens for a week or two. A garlic scape is the flower shoot that has shot up from the stem of a hardneck garlic bulb when growing. The scapes are slender, bright green, and often twisting and turning in elegant swan-like shapes.
‘At the Mountains of Madness’ by H. P. Lovecraft. I. I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why.
The exceptions to this rule are those pages created as labors of love such as this and my other page for another little known place – Jackson Falls. It was here that I began my church camping experience in and attended every year till when I was a counselor. I was surprised to find pictures of both my father and myself on their Memory Lane page! I’m the dorky kid with glasses on the right edge of this picture and my father is third from the right in the back row.
I then began a fruitless Web search for information about another special place of my youth – Camp Michaux. Finding nothing online in was the inspiration for creating this page. I first saw this region of Pennsylvania in the s as a grade schooler attending Wilson College for women in Chambersburg. Not as their first male student but as a preacher’s kid at a summer church conferences with my parents.

Caferzade In , archeologist Isaak Jafarzade began the first archeological investigation of the petroglyphs at Gobustan. This research was published in a book entitled “Gobustan” in In the ancient caves of Gobustan which date back at least 5, years, cave drawings depict two different kinds of boats that were used for early navigation.

Christian soteriology The central belief of classical Pentecostalism is that through the death , burial , and resurrection of Jesus Christ , sins can be forgiven and humanity reconciled with God. The fundamental requirement of Pentecostalism is that one be born again. Baptism with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues are not generally required, though Pentecostal converts are usually encouraged to seek these experiences.

At the Mountains of Madness By H. I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why. It is altogether against my will that I tell my reasons for opposing this contemplated invasion of the antarctic—with its vast fossil-hunt and its wholesale boring and melting of the ancient ice-cap—and I am the more reluctant because my warning may be in vain.
Doubt of the real facts, as I must reveal them, is inevitable; yet if I suppressed what will seem extravagant and incredible there would be nothing left. Still, they will be doubted because of the great lengths to which clever fakery can be carried. The ink drawings, of course, will be jeered at as obvious impostures; notwithstanding a strangeness of technique which art experts ought to remark and puzzle over. In the end I must rely on the judgment and standing of the few scientific leaders who have, on the one hand, sufficient independence of thought to weigh my data on its own hideously convincing merits or in the light of certain primordial and highly baffling myth-cycles; and on the other hand, sufficient influence to deter the exploring world in general from any rash and overambitious programme in the region of those mountains of madness.

The distribution of the separate creative acts into six hour days was a deliberate scheme used by the writer. Notice especially the obvious connection between the environments created on the first three days and the creatures made to inhabit them on the last three days. Go to the companion website for a table about repetitions in the priestly creation story. Each living being has its appropriate place within the structure.
Only a hint of authorial manipulation is evident in that there are eight discrete creating acts, yet they are contained within a six-day structure. Remember, the Priestly writer had an interest in grounding the present practice of Sabbath rest with divine precedent. It proposes that the world was perfectly formed.
